Runs where the estimated current stays light or less. The page does not pick one for you — boat schedules, light and traffic decide that.
The fortnightly beat is spring and neap. Springs follow the new and full moon by a day or two; neaps come at the quarters. This is the pattern worth planning around — it changes a site's character far more than the time of day does.
The yearทั้งปี
Springs follow the new and full moon by a day or two, and that is when the current runs hardest; neaps fall in between. For a site that is only diveable near slack, plan the trip around the neap weeks. Click a day to open it above.

The minutes are how much of each slot the estimate stays light or slack. The page does not pick a best day for you — boats, light, weather and where the other boats will be decide that. The link in the address bar keeps these dates and slots, so a plan can be sent to the team.

Slack is at the turn, not at the height
Water moves because the sea is filling or emptying. At high water it has finished filling and has not started emptying, so for a while it barely moves at all — that is slack, and the same is true at low water. Halfway between, the level is changing fastest and so is the flow. Put the cursor on a steep part of the curve and then on a flat part, and watch the arrow: that is the entire model.
The two coasts are different animals
The Andaman side is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows a day, a big range, and the level changing fast in between. The Gulf of Thailand is diurnal: one high and one low, and the water level changes less than half as fast. That is not a modelling choice — it falls out of the records, and it is why a Gulf site with the same shape of rock as an Andaman one is a gentler dive. The form factor in the badges above is the standard measure of it.
Watch that number as you move round the Gulf, because it is not constant. At the Ko Lak gauge the twice-a-day part of the tide has almost vanished — six centimetres of it — and at Samaesarn, on the eastern shore, it is three times bigger, which drops the form factor from 11.4 to 2.9. The reason is a single point in the middle of the Gulf where that part of the tide cancels out completely and swings around, so it dies away as you approach and grows again on the far side. You can see it in the curve: at the Ko Lak gauge a second, smaller high appears on 19 days of the year, and at Samaesarn on 110. It is the one place on this page where a Gulf site regularly gives you two turns of the tide to choose between instead of one.
What this page is confident about, and what it is not
Timing is solid where there is a gauge, and it has been checked two separate ways. The tide curve comes from harmonic constituents fitted to years of hourly observations at a real gauge. Hold a whole year back and refit without it, and the model predicts that unseen year's water level at Phuket to under 9 cm. Then, separately, compare the finished model against every high and low water actually recorded in a year — 955 of them — and its turning points land within fifteen minutes of the real ones 94% of the time, with an average error under a minute.
Chumphon, Samaesarn, Rayong and Koh Chang cannot be checked that way at all, because there is no gauge near any of them to check against. They come from a global model, and two weaker kinds of evidence stand behind them. First, run that model at Ko Lak — the one gauge the Gulf has — and it matches five years of observations to 13 cm, against 13 cm for the gauge's own local fit. Second, and closer to home, the Royal Thai Navy publishes predicted tide tables for reference ports 5 to 32 km from these four areas, and the model lands within a couple of minutes of them on average, with 70 to 93% of turns inside half an hour. The Navy tables are somebody else's prediction rather than an observation, so that is a second opinion and not ground truth — but it is a second opinion computed next door, by the people whose job this is. Treat these times as good to the nearest half hour rather than the nearest minute, and read the panel under each site.
Other tide apps will disagree with this page by about half an hour. That is expected and it is worth knowing why before it worries anyone. A genuine tidal lag of twenty to forty minutes across a few tens of kilometres is ordinary, so two pages computing for two points near the same island will differ — and most apps publish under a port name without saying which point they used. On the Andaman coast and in the western Gulf this page predicts for the gauge itself and was checked against that gauge's own recorded turns, which is the closest thing to ground truth available.
On the four model-derived areas this page is doing the same thing those apps do — running a global model — so it has no claim to be better there. The two differences it does claim are that it names the exact point it computed for, and that it publishes how that model scored, both against the one gauge in this sea and against the Navy's own tables, instead of asking you to assume.
Strength is a guess. Turning a rate of sea level change into a current at one particular pinnacle needs the shape of the seabed around it, and nobody has measured that here. The strength shown is the site's exposure multiplied by the slope — a rule of thumb made visible, nothing more. That is why it is reported as a word and an arrow and never in knots: a number in knots would be read as a measurement.
What is missing
- Only the tidal part. Monsoon-driven flow, wind set-up and ocean swell are real and are not in this model. In the south-west monsoon an Andaman site can run hard at a time this page calls slack.
- No compass direction. The page knows the water is flooding or ebbing; which way that runs past a given rock is local knowledge it does not have.
- One gauge per region. Richelieu Rock is 80 km from the gauge that draws its curve, and Koh Tao is 190 km from its. The shape is right; the timing at the far sites carries real uncertainty.
- Four areas have no gauge at all. Chumphon, Samaesarn, Rayong and Koh Chang are not drawn from observations, because there is no tide gauge anywhere near them in any open archive — they come from a global model built from satellite altimetry instead, and every one of them says so on its own panel, with the numbers. Chumphon is the cautionary one: it was built on the Ko Lak gauge first, because 155 km along the same shore seemed close enough, and the Navy's own table for a port 5 km from those rocks says the gauge is a quarter of an hour out there while the model is under two minutes. Distance along a coast is not the same as distance through the tide.
