08Looking down on your own rig
You from above. The pale wedge is what the lens sees; the warm wedges are the strobe beams. Every particle lit inside the pale wedge and in front of the subject comes back as backscatter — so the job is to keep the beams out of it until they reach the subject.

10What to carry in your head
The one rule everything else hangs off
Shutter speed controls the water. Aperture and strobe power control the subject. The flash is over in less than a thousandth of a second, so how long you leave the shutter open changes nothing about it — it only changes how much sun the sensor collects alongside.
So you have two dials for two halves of the picture, and you can set them independently. Almost nobody who is struggling with underwater photography knows this yet, and almost everybody who has stopped struggling knows it.
Aperture is the exception: it is in both. Change it and both halves move together, which is why it is the wrong control to reach for first when only one half is wrong.
If you are shooting an action cam
Switch the camera at the top of the rail to Action cam. The aperture is fixed, the exposure is chosen for you, and the thing that lights the subject is a lamp, not a flash — and that last difference is not cosmetic.
A flash is over in under a millisecond, so shutter speed cannot change what it puts on the subject. A lamp is on the whole time the shutter is open, so it lands on the same side of the sum as sunlight: slow the shutter and a lamp-lit subject gets brighter. The rule that runs the manual page inverts here.
What auto exposure will and will not do. It holds the brightness steady as you go deeper, so the picture keeps looking correctly exposed all the way down — while the colour drains out of it. That is the whole trap. The camera can fix dark. It cannot fix red. Watch the red figure, not the brightness.
So the only two things that work are the two that shorten the path light takes through water: get closer, and go shallower. A lamp is the third, and it only earns its keep deeper, in shade, or very close — in bright water at 10 m daylight simply drowns it.
A red filter rebalances what is left, at about a stop and a third of light. It cannot invent red that never arrived, and it fights a lamp rather than helping one: with both on, anything the lamp lights goes orange. Pick one.
A wide-angle starting point
Manual mode. 1/125 · f/8 · ISO 200, strobes at about a quarter power, arms wide and slightly back, aimed so the edges of the beams cross just past the subject.
Then: too pale a background? Faster shutter. Too dark? Slower shutter, or ISO up. Subject too dark? More strobe power, or move the strobes closer, or open the aperture and re-check the background. Subject too bright? Less power first, aperture second.
Get close. Then get closer. A fisheye at 30 cm through clear water beats the same lens at 1.5 m every time, because you have taken most of the water out of the picture — and with it most of the colour loss and all of the backscatter.
A macro starting point
1/250 · f/16–22 · ISO 100, one strobe, half to full power, close in. The small aperture is not for the background — it is because at life size your depth of field is barely a millimetre and you need every fraction of it.
That combination kills the ambient light almost completely, which is where the classic black background comes from. It is not a backdrop or an edit. It is what a correctly exposed macro frame does by itself, and you can watch it happen on the bars above by dragging the aperture from f/4 to f/22.
Focus by moving the whole camera, not the focus ring. Set the magnification you want, then rock forward and back a few millimetres and fire at the moment it snaps in. Everyone does it this way; nobody says so.
Backscatter, and the five things that fix it
Those white specks are not dirt on your dome. They are particles in the water between you and your subject, lit by your own strobes and thrown straight back at the lens. In order of how much they help:
1 · Get closer. Halve the distance and you have roughly quartered the lit water in front of you. Nothing else on this list comes close.
2 · Arms out and back. Behind the port and out to the side, so the beams enter the frame late.
3 · Aim outward. Light the subject with the edge of the beam. Aiming straight at it lights everything in between just as well.
4 · Take a strobe off. One light, well placed, beats two badly placed.
5 · Pick your water. Silt takes hours to settle and no strobe position saves a stirred-up bottom.
Watch the number above while you do it. Anything below about −8 stops is invisible in the frame; above −4 you have lost the shot.
Why everything goes blue, and what actually fixes it
Water absorbs red first. Half of it is gone within the first two metres, most of the rest by five, and by twenty there is none left at all — then orange goes, then yellow. This is absorption, not a colour cast, so it cannot be corrected afterwards: you cannot amplify a signal that never arrived.
Two real fixes. Strobe light is full-spectrum and only has to cross a metre of water, so it puts the red back on anything close enough. Getting close is the same fix by another route.
Two fixes that are not fixes. Setting white balance for the water does help ambient-only shots at shallow depth — and it will turn anything your strobe lights an unmistakable warm pink, because you have told the camera to add red to a frame where the strobe already supplied it. Try it on the toggle above. And a red filter buys ambient colour at the cost of two stops of light and is useless once a strobe is on.
Strobe positions worth knowing
Wide, edge lighting. Arms wide, well back, aimed so the beam edges cross past the subject. The default for reefscapes and the position most people never push far enough.
Close-focus wide angle. Strobes pulled in and forward for a subject inches from the dome, powered right down. The classic "big foreground, blue background, sunball in the corner" frame.
Macro, one light, high and forward. Above and slightly ahead of the subject, angled down. Gives modelling and shadow instead of a flat frontal blast.
Snoot. A tube that cuts the beam to a spot the size of a coin. Lights the nudibranch and nothing else, so the background goes truly black and backscatter has nothing to scatter off. It is also fiddly enough that you will miss shots learning it, which is a good reason to learn it here.
Backlighting. One strobe behind a translucent subject, aimed back at the lens past it. Hard, and worth it.
Focus and depth of field
Depth of field collapses with the square of magnification. At life size f/8 gives you about half a millimetre and f/22 not quite two — so if you need a centimetre, no aperture on the camera will find it and you have to back off and shoot smaller. This is why macro shooters live at apertures a topside photographer would call absurd, and why they then need real strobe power to feed them.
Wide angle is the opposite problem: behind a dome port the lens focuses on a virtual image only a few dozen centimetres away, so depth of field is generous and you can afford f/8. What a dome will not forgive is a corner-to-corner flat subject — dome geometry softens the edges, so put something interesting in the middle and water in the corners.
Focus on the eye. If it has no eye, focus on the rhinophores. If it has neither, focus on whatever is nearest the lens.
Ambient-only shooting
Turn the strobes off, put the sun behind the subject, get shallow, and shoot up. Silhouettes, snorkelers, big animals too far away for a strobe to matter — all ambient. Set white balance for the water or shoot raw and fix it later.
Watch the shutter: without a strobe to freeze the subject, everything now depends on it. 1/250 for anything moving. And below about 1/60 in surge you are photographing your own breathing.
Before you get in
O-rings greased lightly and clean — one hair floods a housing. Battery and card in. Manual mode, sensible starting settings dialled before the housing closes. Strobes on, and test-fire them on the boat, not at 18 m. Vacuum check if the housing has one. Take a shot of your hand on the surface to prove the whole chain works.
Afterwards: rinse in fresh water, work the buttons under it, and leave it to soak. Do not open a wet housing over your camera.
The part that is not about photography
Buoyancy first. A photographer who is not in complete control of their position is a photographer kneeling on coral, and no picture is worth that. If you cannot hold the frame without touching anything, you are not ready for that shot yet — swim on and come back when you are.
Do not move animals, do not chase them, and do not fire a snoot into a night creature's eyes repeatedly. Watch your gauges: the camera is very good at making an hour feel like fifteen minutes, and the most common incident in underwater photography is a photographer who forgot to look at anything else.
Close-focus wide angle
