PADUM DIVING

Underwater Navigation

A compass tells you which way you are pointing. It has nothing to say about which way you are going, and nothing at all to say about where you are. Those are three different questions, and every navigation failure is someone answering the last two with an instrument that only answers the first.

Teaching model. Simplified water. Not a dive plan.

Practise navigating, without getting wet

You get a compass, a depth gauge and a count of your own kick cycles — the same three things you have underwater, and nothing else. Each exercise tells you what to press, step by step.

06 What you can seeสิ่งที่คุณมองเห็น

The red needle is north. The yellow marks are the heading you asked for. Keeping one between the other two is how you hold a course. Drag the ring to move the marks, then press the button below to turn onto them.

Time compression

Real time while you are steering. Speed it up when you are watching a pattern or a drill run, since a square is fifteen minutes of finning and there is nothing to do for fourteen of them.

Points the camera where you meant to go, instead of following every twitch of how you are actually holding it. Turn it off to see the body language — the compass shows the same wander exactly either way.

07 Your slate

08Heading, current, track

Three vectors that have to add up. What you swim through the water, what the water adds, and what the ground gets. The compass measures the first one and nothing else.

The correction

Course you want to make good

09The legs you swam

What you would have written on the slate: a heading and a count for each leg. This is the entire record a diver has, and it is enough to draw the blue line on the chart and nothing else.

10What to carry in your head

Three questions, three answers

Your heading is where you point. Your track is where you go. Your position is the running total of the track. The compass answers the first one, honestly, all dive long. Nothing you are carrying answers the third.

This is why a diver can hold 090 perfectly for twenty minutes and surface somewhere they have never been.

Set the bezel before you leave

Point yourself at where you are going, then rotate the bezel until the gate brackets the north needle. Now you do not have to read a number for the rest of the leg — you keep the needle between the marks, which you can do in the dark, with a torch in one hand, at a glance.

Reading the number instead of using the gate is the single most common reason a heading wanders: it takes three seconds and you spend those three seconds not swimming straight.

Hold it square to your body

Both hands on the compass, arms locked, elbows in, the lubber line down your centreline. If the compass is out to one side or canted, it reads a perfect heading while your body travels a few degrees off it — and no instrument you own will ever tell you.

Four degrees is 2.8 metres of error over a 40 metre leg. That is more than the visibility on a lot of days, which is exactly why the boat is not where you expected.

Measure your kick cycle. Once, properly.

A kick cycle is both fins completing one full up-and-down. Swim a known distance — thirty metres of line, a marked stretch of pool — at your normal pace and count. Do it in the kit you actually dive in, because a camera and a wing add drag and a fresh diver kicks harder than a tired one.

Distance is the half of dead reckoning people skip. A heading with no distance is a direction, not a position.

The current does not feel like anything

In midwater, with nothing to reference, a one-knot current is completely undetectable. You are moving with the water, so the water is still relative to you. It only becomes visible against the ground: particles streaming past, sand ripples going by, a fan bent over.

Look at the bottom, not at the blue. If you cannot see the bottom, look at your own bubbles or your buddy against a fixed thing.

Ferry angle: aim upstream

To make good a course across a current, point some degrees into it. How many: sin(offset) = current ÷ your speed × sin(angle between the current and your course). In practice you do not do the arithmetic underwater; you pick a mark ahead, watch whether you are sliding off it, and correct until you are not.

If the current across your course is faster than you can swim, there is no angle that works. That is not a hard dive, it is a different dive — go with it and get picked up, or change the course.

Out and back is the whole exam

Swim a heading, turn exactly 180, swim the same count. If you land on your start, your compass technique, your calibration, your trim and your reading of the current are all good enough. If you do not, the direction of the miss names the culprit: sideways is a current or an alignment error, short or long is calibration.

Squares and triangles: the sum of the turns

A square is four 90s and a triangle is three 120s. Both sum to 360, which is the point of them: you finish pointing the way you started, so any leftover rotation was error you can measure.

The triangle is harder for one reason only: your body has a feel for a right angle and none at all for 120 degrees, so you have to actually read the compass instead of turning "a corner".

Search patterns: pick by what you know

You know a point — where it was last seen, where the shot line is: expanding square from that datum, or a circular search on a line clipped to it.

You know an area — somewhere in that bay, along that reef: parallel sweeps, which cover ground faster than anything else.

You know a line — the wall, the hull, a jackstay: swim it out and back, offset by a sweep width each pass.

Spacing is not visibility

You can see five metres. You cannot search five metres each side while also holding a heading, watching your buddy and staying off the bottom. Work on about two thirds of your visibility as the useful sweep width, and set your pattern spacing to that or tighter.

A pattern with spacing wider than the sweep is a drawing of a search. The gaps are always in the middle, always invisible, and always where the thing is.

The circular search does not care about the current

A weight at the datum, a line to it, and you swim the arc with the line taut. The line does the navigating, so drift, visibility and compass error stop mattering. It is slow and it is fiddly with two divers, and it is what you use when finding the thing actually matters.

Let out exactly one sweep width at the end of each arc. Any more and you have just drawn rings around the object.

Natural navigation is the primary technique

The compass is a backup for when the site runs out of information. Most sites do not. Depth is a contour line you can follow in zero visibility. Ripples run parallel to the shore, so crossing them takes you in or out. The slope is downhill to the open sea almost everywhere. The sun is a bearing you can check without taking a hand off anything.

On a wall, the technique is one sentence: wall on your left going out, wall on your right coming back. It cannot fail, it needs nothing, and it does not care what the current is doing.

Depth is a bearing on a pinnacle

Every depth on a cone is a closed circle. Hold whatever depth the line leaves you at and swim, and you will come back to it, having navigated an entire dive with a gauge that cost a fraction of the compass.

Leading a dive

Navigating for yourself and navigating for six people are different jobs. Set the pace at the slowest diver, not at yours. Look behind you at every turn, because a turn is where you lose people. Give the group the plan on the surface — heading out, roughly how long, what the turn point looks like — so that if you are separated they can execute it without you.

And budget the gas for the way back against the current, not for the way out with it. Half your gas out and half back is only correct in slack water.

When you are lost, stop

The instinct is to swim faster in the direction you last believed in, which converts a small navigation problem into a large gas problem. Stop, look at the bottom for information — slope, ripples, a feature you saw on the way out — and decide before you move.

If nothing on the bottom helps, ascend. From the surface you can see the boat, and a long surface swim is an inconvenience. Continuing to search underwater on the gas you need to get home is not.
